Chimpanzee Habituation
Experience — Full Day
with Wild Chimps

The deepest possible chimpanzee encounter in Africa. Spend an entire day — dawn to dusk — alongside semi-habituated chimps and UWA researchers. Watch them wake, feed, groom, play, and build their night nests.

🌅 Dawn to Dusk with Chimps 🔬 Alongside UWA Researchers 📸 Photography Focus From $75/month

"A standard chimp trek gives you 1 hour with the troop. The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience gives you the whole day. You arrive before the chimps descend from their sleeping trees. You watch them groom in the morning light, forage through the afternoon, nurse their young, clash over dominance, and finally build new leaf nests as darkness approaches. This is not wildlife tourism. This is wildlife immersion — and there is nothing else like it in Africa."

FAQ
Habituation Experience — Questions Answered
QWhat does "semi-habituated" mean for the CHEX?
Semi-habituated chimps are in the process of being accustomed to human presence by UWA researchers — they are comfortable enough with observers to continue their natural behaviour, but less predictable than fully habituated trekking groups. This creates a more authentic, less "managed" encounter. Your ranger guide ensures you maintain a safe and respectful distance at all times.
QIs the CHEX suitable for photographers?
The Habituation Experience is the single best wildlife photography opportunity in Uganda and arguably one of the finest in Africa. The extended time with the chimps — combined with natural behaviour, morning and afternoon light, and a maximum of 4 visitors — gives photographers time to position, anticipate behaviour, and capture images that are simply not possible in a standard 1-hour trek. A 100–400mm telephoto lens is recommended.
QWhat fitness level is required?
A full day on foot in a tropical forest requires good physical fitness. You will cover 8–15 km on forest trails, with elevation changes, and in warm and humid conditions. We recommend being comfortable with 5–6 hours of moderate hiking. Sturdy, ankle-supporting hiking boots and long trousers are essential. If in doubt, the standard chimp trek (C-01) is a better fit.
"The CHEX is limited to 4 visitors per day — the most exclusive wildlife encounter in Uganda. Availability is very limited. Contact us today to secure your date."
