Gorilla Habituation Experience
4 Hours with Semi-Habituated Gorillas
"The Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHE) is the most exclusive gorilla encounter available anywhere in the world. 3-Day Itinerary — Day by Day
Day 1
Kampala / Entebbe → Bwindi Rushaga Sector
Depart early morning. Drive southwest through Uganda's spectacular highlands to the Rushaga sector of Bwindi. Arrive afternoon. This evening is important — your guide will brief you thoroughly on GHE protocols, what to expect, and how to position yourself for maximum photography during the 4-hour encounter. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.
Day 2
THE GORILLA HABITUATION EXPERIENCE — 4 Hours with Wild Gorillas
This is unlike any other gorilla experience in the world.
5:30am: Early breakfast and preparation. 6:00am: Depart park headquarters with UWA researchers, trackers, and armed rangers — your group is maximum 4 visitors (vs 8 for standard trekking). You follow the research team as they locate the semi-habituated gorilla family from their sleeping nests.
Spend the next 4 hours observing the family's complete morning routine: watching juveniles wake and begin playing, observing the silverback's morning chest-beating and group management, recording females foraging and nursing, photographing the extraordinary social dynamics that standard trekking only glimpses.
With 4 hours vs 1 hour, you see the gorillas in contexts impossible in standard trekking — afternoon rest, food competition, group movement decisions, and the subtle communication between family members that makes them so fascinating. Return to lodge for a late lunch and debrief with your guide.
Afternoon: Rest, or optional village walk in the Rushaga community.
Day 3
Bwindi Forest Walk → Return to Entebbe / Kampala
Morning forest walk in Bwindi's buffer zone — excellent for birds and forest atmosphere. Depart mid-morning for the return drive north. Arrive Kampala/Entebbe by evening. Your guide will email your full trip report and species list within 48 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between GHE and standard gorilla trekking?
Standard gorilla trekking: 1 hour maximum, fully habituated family, groups of up to 8. Gorilla Habituation Experience: 4 hours, semi-habituated family (still being accustomed to humans), maximum 4 visitors, alongside UWA researchers. The GHE is 4× longer, half the group size, and offers access to a less-experienced family — which often means more natural, uninhibited behaviour.
Is the $1,500 GHE permit really included?
Yes. The full Gorilla Habituation Experience permit ($1,500 per person) is included in the G-04 package price. This permit is $700 more expensive than the standard gorilla permit ($800) — reflecting the longer duration and smaller group size.
How far in advance must I book the GHE?
The GHE should be booked at least 6–12 months in advance, especially for peak season (June–September). Only 4 visitors per day can participate — it's the most exclusive gorilla permit in Uganda. We strongly recommend booking as early as possible to secure your preferred dates. Start your payment plan now to lock in your booking.
Is the GHE more physically demanding?
Yes — slightly. You spend 4+ hours in the forest including the walk in and out, so you need reasonable fitness. However, pacing is set by the research team and can be adjusted. The terrain in Rushaga is variable. Your guide will advise on appropriate preparation.
