The Ultimate Guide to Gorilla Trekking in Uganda (2025 Edition)

📅 Updated June 2025 ⏱ 12 min read ✍ Roam Beyond Tours Expert Team

Standing face-to-face with a mountain gorilla in the misty forests of Bwindi is, without question, one of the most profoundly moving experiences on Earth. Their deep, intelligent eyes, their sheer power, their surprisingly human-like gestures — nothing prepares you for the moment you first lock eyes with one of our closest living relatives. Uganda is home to over half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, and Roam Beyond Tours has been guiding travellers to these extraordinary encounters for years. This comprehensive guide tells you everything you need to know for your 2025 gorilla trekking adventure.

🦍 Quick Facts — Mountain Gorillas in Uganda

  • Total mountain gorillas worldwide: Approximately 1,063
  • Uganda's share: Over 500 (roughly half of all mountain gorillas)
  • Parks: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest & Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
  • Permit cost (2025): USD $800 per person per trek
  • Time with gorillas: 1 hour (strictly enforced)
  • Minimum age: 15 years

Why Uganda Is the #1 Gorilla Trekking Destination

Uganda outperforms every competitor for gorilla trekking. While Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park offers luxury lodges, Uganda delivers a richer, wilder, and more affordable experience. Uganda's gorilla permit costs USD $800, compared to Rwanda's USD $1,500 — a saving that lets you extend your safari to include chimpanzee trekking, game drives, or a Nile boat cruise without breaking the bank.

Beyond cost, Uganda's national parks are far more diverse. After your gorilla trek at Bwindi, you can spend the following days tracking chimpanzees in Kibale Forest, watching tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and cruising the Kazinga Channel — all within a few hours' drive. No other single destination in Africa offers this breadth of wildlife in such a compact geography.

Where to Trek: Bwindi vs Mgahinga

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Bwindi is Uganda's gorilla trekking capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to approximately 23 habituated gorilla families spread across four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Each sector offers a different landscape and difficulty level, with Buhoma being the most accessible and Nkuringo offering the most dramatic highland terrain.

  • Buhoma: Most popular, good road access, suits all fitness levels
  • Ruhija: Higher altitude, cooler, excellent birdwatching nearby
  • Rushaga: Most gorilla families, more permits available
  • Nkuringo: Steep terrain, breathtaking views, border with DRC

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Smaller and less visited than Bwindi, Mgahinga offers a more intimate trekking experience on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes. It is home to one habituated gorilla family — the Nyakagezi family — and also provides opportunities to trek the rare and spectacularly coloured golden monkeys. The volcanic landscape here is dramatically beautiful.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Uganda's gorilla parks can be visited year-round, but two dry seasons offer the most comfortable trekking conditions:

  • June–September (Peak Season): Long dry season, drier trails, easier forest navigation. Most popular — book early.
  • December–February (Short Dry Season): Excellent conditions, fewer crowds than the long dry season.
  • March–May (Long Rains): Trails muddy, fewer tourists, lush green forests — gorilla encounters equally rewarding.
  • October–November (Short Rains): Some rainfall but accessible; mid-range crowds.

What to Expect on Trek Day

A typical gorilla trekking day starts early. You'll be at the park headquarters by 7:30am for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. Your group of up to eight trekkers sets off with armed rangers and trained trackers who monitor the gorilla families daily. The trek duration varies from 30 minutes to six hours depending on where the family has moved — the gorillas are wild and free-roaming within their range.

When you reach the family, you have exactly one hour with them — no exceptions. During that hour, keep a distance of 10 metres, avoid direct eye contact, do not use flash photography, and follow your guide's instructions at all times. You may witness silverbacks beating their chests, young gorillas playing in the tree canopy, or mothers nursing their babies.

🎒 Essential Packing List for Gorilla Trekking

  • Waterproof hiking boots (ankle support essential)
  • Long-sleeved shirt and long trousers (protect against nettles and stings)

  • Gardening gloves (for grabbing vegetation on steep slopes)
  • Insect repellent with DEET
  • Camera (no flash) — a mirrorless or DSLR is ideal

Health & Safety Requirements

Mountain gorillas share approximately 98% of their DNA with humans, making them susceptible to human illnesses. Uganda Wildlife Authority requires that any trekker showing symptoms of cold, flu, or respiratory illness must not trek. This is a firm policy to protect gorilla health. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory to enter Uganda; proof is required at the airport. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gorilla trekking safe?

Yes. Habituated gorilla families are accustomed to human presence, and UWA rangers accompany every group. Gorilla attacks are extremely rare when guidelines are followed.

How fit do I need to be?

A moderate level of fitness is recommended. Treks range from relatively easy (Buhoma) to quite strenuous (Nkuringo). Porters are available to carry bags and assist on steep terrain — hiring one also directly supports the local community.

Can I combine gorilla trekking with other Uganda experiences?

Absolutely, and we highly recommend it. Uganda's density of wildlife means you can combine gorilla trekking with chimpanzee tracking, Queen Elizabeth game drives, Murchison Falls, and a Nile boat safari all in one trip. Roam Beyond Tours specialises in exactly these kinds of comprehensive multi-experience safaris.
