Budongo Forest Chimp Trek
Murchison Falls · Nile Cruise · Red-Tailed Monkeys

"Budongo Forest Reserve — one of Uganda's largest and least-visited forests — sits adjacent to Murchison Falls National Park and offers a completely different chimp tracking experience from Kibale. Combine it with the world's most powerful waterfall, a classic Nile game drive, and the famous Nile launch cruise to create a northern Uganda circuit that most visitors never experience."

4-Day Itinerary — Day by Day
Day 1
Kampala → Ziwa Rhino (Optional) → Murchison Falls NP (305 km)
Depart Kampala north on the Kampala–Gulu highway. Optional stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary (en route, ~2 hrs from Kampala) — Uganda's only wild white rhino population, tracked on foot with rangers. Continue to Murchison Falls National Park. Arrive at lodge by early evening. Briefing and dinner.
Day 2
Budongo Forest Chimp Trek (Morning) + Murchison Game Drive (Afternoon)
Morning: Budongo Forest Chimp Trek. Budongo Forest Reserve borders the southern edge of Murchison Falls NP and is one of Uganda's most biodiverse forests — home to over 700 chimpanzees across multiple communities. Unlike Kibale's tourist-managed tracking, Budongo offers a more raw, less-visited experience. Set off with your ranger guide into the mahogany and ironwood forest. Track the chimps through their morning territory. Spend your permitted time with them — in Budongo, the chimps are often found feeding in fruiting mahogany trees, their silhouettes dramatic against the forest canopy. Afternoon: Murchison Falls Game Drive. Drive to the northern bank for Uganda's classic game drive — lion, elephant, Rothschild's giraffe, Jackson's hartebeest, and buffalo are regularly seen. The giraffe here are Rothschild's — one of the world's most endangered giraffe subspecies, with a significant population in Murchison.
Day 3
Nile Boat Cruise to Murchison Falls + Delta Birding
Morning: The Nile Launch Cruise. Board the launch from Paraa for the 2-hour cruise upriver to the base of Murchison Falls — where the entire Nile River squeezes through a 7-metre gorge and drops 43 metres in the most powerful waterfall on Earth. The banks are lined with hippos, enormous Nile crocodiles, African skimmer, goliath heron, and the resident shoebill stork in the delta wetlands. This cruise is one of Uganda's greatest wildlife experiences. Afternoon: birding walk in the Murchison delta — excellent for shoebill stork, yellow-billed stork, and Abyssinian ground hornbill. Return to lodge for final night.
Day 4
Morning Game Drive → Return Kampala (305 km)
Final dawn game drive — Murchison at first light. Then depart south to Kampala (305 km, approx. 5 hours). Arrive by afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Budongo compare to Kibale for chimp tracking?
Kibale is larger, more famous, and has more habituated communities — making encounter rates very high. Budongo is less visited, the tracking feels more raw and adventurous, and the forest is different in character — tall mahogany and ironwood rather than Kibale's mixed canopy. Budongo chimps are habituated but the experience feels less managed, which many serious wildlife enthusiasts prefer. The $30 permit (vs $250 at Kibale) makes it far more affordable.
Is the Nile cruise to Murchison Falls safe?
Yes — the UWA-operated launch is a safe, well-maintained vessel with life jackets provided. The hippos and crocodiles on the banks are not in the water alongside the boat. The cruise is suitable for all ages. The spray from the base of Murchison Falls is part of the experience — bring a light waterproof jacket.
Can I add rhino tracking at Ziwa?
Yes — Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is directly on the route from Kampala to Murchison and can be added as a 2-hour stop on Day 1. Cost is approximately $40 per person for the rhino tracking walk (with armed ranger). This gives you chimps, rhinos, the Nile cruise, game drives, and Murchison Falls in a single 4-day trip.
"Chimpanzee tracking permits in Kibale are limited to 32 per day — and across Uganda, chimp encounters are among the most profoundly moving wildlife experiences on Earth. Start your Roam Beyond payment plan today and secure your date before it's gone."
