Budget Chimp Trek — Crowd-Free Forest Experience

Depart Kampala southwest on the Kampala–Mbarara highway, continuing through Mbarara and south toward the Queen Elizabeth NP area. Total drive approximately 420 km, 6–7 hours. Arrive at your basic but comfortable forest guesthouse or camp near Kalinzu. Briefing with your forest guide. Dinner and early overnight.

Morning: Kalinzu Chimp Trek. Early breakfast. Meet your Kalinzu Forest Reserve guide — local naturalists with deep knowledge of this forest's chimpanzee communities. Set off into the mahogany forest. Kalinzu is less managed than Kibale — tracking feels more authentic, more adventurous. The chimps here are habituated but encountered far less frequently by tourists, meaning their behaviour is more natural. Spend your permitted time with the Kalinzu chimpanzees — typically encountered in fruit trees, on the forest floor, or calling from the canopy. Because the forest sees far fewer visitors, the encounters are unhurried and deeply atmospheric. Afternoon: Kalinzu Forest Nature Walk. A slower-paced guided walk through Kalinzu's forest, targeting black-and-white colobus monkeys (abundant in Kalinzu), red-tailed monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys, and birds. Kalinzu is excellent for forest hornbills and sunbirds. Your guide explains the forest ecology and medicinal plant uses of the local Batooro people.

Morning forest walk or rest. Depart mid-morning for the long return drive to Kampala or Entebbe (420 km, 6–7 hours). Arrive by evening.
