Posho
Maize flour porridge โ€” the other Ugandan staple. Versatile and comforting with any stew.

08:00 AM โ€” Farmers' Market
Morning Market Shopping with Local Guide
Begin at a Kampala local market โ€” Nakasero or Owino depending on the day. Your guide navigates the labyrinthine stalls with you, explaining ingredients, selecting the freshest matoke, groundnuts, tomatoes, onions, passion fruit, and spices. Learn to bargain respectfully, spot the freshest produce, and understand the supply chain from Ugandan farm to table. The market visit is one of the most immersive 45 minutes you'll spend in Uganda.

09:00 AM โ€” Host Family Kitchen
Cooking Class with a Ugandan Family
Move to the host family's home โ€” a genuine Kampala household, not a tourist facility. The family matriarch (often a grandmother or mother) leads the cooking class with warmth, humour, and precision. You prepare 3โ€“4 dishes in sequence: start with matoke wrapping and steaming, move to the G-nut stew base, then roll and fry your Rolex. Children of the family often appear โ€” a genuinely heartwarming atmosphere that guests universally describe as a trip highlight.

11:30 AM โ€” Communal Meal
Share the Meal Together
Sit together โ€” guests and host family โ€” and eat everything you've cooked. The family shares stories over the meal: what food means in Buganda culture, the rituals of hospitality, how different tribes cook differently. Receive your personalised Roam Beyond recipe card set to recreate these dishes at home. Return to hotel by 13:00.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this suitable for children?
Absolutely โ€” children love the cooking class. The host family's own children are usually present, and kids interact naturally. The Rolex-making is particularly popular with younger guests. Minimum recommended age is 5 years old.
Can dietary requirements be accommodated?
Yes. Please inform us of any dietary requirements when booking โ€” vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and halal options can all be accommodated with advance notice. Ugandan cuisine is naturally very plant-friendly.
Is the host family the same every time?
Roam Beyond works with three rotating host families โ€” all trained and beloved by our guests. Each family has a slightly different cooking style and personality. Feedback from guests consistently calls this their favourite Uganda experience. We match families to group size and any special interests.
