Itinerary — Day by Day
Day 1
Kampala → Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary (175 km) → Murchison Falls NP (130 km)
Depart Kampala north on the Gulu highway. After approximately 2.5 hours, arrive at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary — home to Uganda's only wild white rhino population, re-introduced after the species was hunted to extinction in Uganda in the 1980s. Rhino tracking on foot. An armed UWA ranger leads you on foot through the sanctuary's 7,000-acre grassland and papyrus wetlands to find the rhinos. You may encounter them at distances of just 10–20 metres — extraordinary for an animal that weighs 2,300 kg. The rhinos are habituated to human presence and remain calm. Spend your allocated time with them before the ranger signals retreat. Continue north to Murchison Falls NP (130 km, 2 hours). Arrive at lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 2
Murchison — Game Drive (Morning) + Shoebill Search (Afternoon)
Dawn game drive — northern bank. Murchison Falls NP at first light is exceptional — lion prides active, giraffe tall against the sunrise, elephants moving toward water. Jackson's hartebeest, Uganda kob, and oribi in the grasslands. Leopard possible in riverine forest. Afternoon: Shoebill Stork Search. The Murchison delta — where the Victoria Nile meets Lake Albert — is one of East Africa's most important wetland habitats, home to the prehistoric Shoebill stork (a species so ancient it evolved in a different era). Your guide takes you by small boat into the papyrus channels of the delta to find this extraordinary 5-foot tall bird, related more to pelicans than storks, that has been unchanged for millions of years. Shoebill sighting rate in the delta is approximately 75–85% with local boat guides who know the bird's territories.
Day 3
Nile Launch Cruise to Murchison Falls + Falls Viewpoint Walk
The day most guests call the highlight of the trip. Board the launch from Paraa at 2pm for the 2-hour cruise upriver to the base of Murchison Falls. Hippo pods on every bank. Enormous crocodiles. Extraordinary waterbird diversity. As you approach the falls, the sound builds — and then the sight: the entire Nile compressed into a 7-metre gap, exploding 43 metres in a curtain of mist and thunder. Morning: drive to the top of the falls for the viewpoint walk. Look down into the gorge from above. Optional boat to the bottom (evening option with some lodges).
Day 4
Final Game Drive → Return Kampala (305 km)
Dawn game drive — one last opportunity for the northern bank lions and giraffe. Depart mid-morning. Return to Kampala (305 km, approx. 5 hours). Arrive by afternoon.

Frequently Asked Questions
How close do I get to the rhinos?
Very close — typically 10–30 metres. The Ziwa rhinos are habituated to guided foot approaches with trained rangers. Your group stays downwind and the ranger manages all aspects of approach safety. There has never been a visitor injury at Ziwa since its establishment. The on-foot experience — with no vehicle barrier — is completely different from seeing rhinos through a car window on a game drive.
What is a Shoebill stork and why is it special?
The Shoebill stork is one of the world's most ancient-looking birds — a 5-foot tall, prehistoric-grey bird with a massive shoe-shaped bill and eyes that appear to have witnessed the dinosaur era. It stands motionless for hours in papyrus swamps, waiting for lungfish. Uganda has one of the world's highest concentrations of Shoebill and the Murchison delta and Mabamba Swamp near Entebbe are the two most reliable sites. Seeing one is a bucket-list moment for birders and non-birders alike.
Is this package suitable for all fitness levels?
Yes — the rhino tracking walk at Ziwa is gentle, flat terrain, typically 30–60 minutes on foot. The boat cruise and game drives require no fitness. The falls viewpoint walk is 15 minutes on a maintained path. This package is suitable for most ages and fitness levels.
