6-Day Itinerary — Day by Day
Day 1
Entebbe / Kampala → Bwindi Impenetrable NP, Uganda
Depart early morning southwest to Bwindi. Arrive afternoon. Trek briefing. Overnight Bwindi lodge.
Day 2
GORILLA TREK #1 — Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda
7:30am departure. Trek into Bwindi — the world's most biodiverse mountain forest. Spend 60 minutes with your first gorilla family. Uganda gorilla permit ($800) included. Afternoon: Batwa cultural walk. Overnight Bwindi.
Day 3
Bwindi → Rwanda Border → Musanze, Volcanoes NP Area
Drive from Bwindi to the Katuna/Gatuna border crossing (2.5 hours). Cross into Rwanda — a strikingly different country: immaculate infrastructure, hilly countryside, and Kigali's remarkable modernity visible in the distance. Drive north to Musanze (Ruhengeri) — gateway to Volcanoes NP. Check in to your Musanze lodge. Evening briefing on Rwanda's gorilla trek protocols — slightly different from Uganda's.
Day 4
GORILLA TREK #2 — Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
7:00am departure to Volcanoes NP headquarters for briefing. Rwanda's gorilla trek is different from Uganda's — the terrain is more open in places, the volcanoes are dramatic, and the families are very large (Rwanda has some of the world's largest gorilla groups). Spend 60 minutes with your second gorilla family. Rwanda permit ($1,500) included. Afternoon: Optional golden monkey trekking in the bamboo zone ($100 permit — add-on). Or drive to Kigali for Rwanda's extraordinary genocide memorial — a profoundly important and moving half-day.
Day 5
Dian Fossey Tomb Hike + Musanze Caves
Morning: Dian Fossey Tomb hike — a 3-hour trek through Volcanoes NP to the research station where Dian Fossey conducted her legendary gorilla research and was tragically murdered. Visit Digit's grave and the site that inspired the film Gorillas in the Mist. Deeply moving. Afternoon: Musanze Caves — an ancient lava tube cave system used for shelter by Rwandan people for thousands of years. Guided tour of the underground chambers. Overnight Musanze.
Day 6
Musanze → Kigali International Airport → Departure (or return Uganda)
Drive 2 hours to Kigali for international departure. OR: return across the border to Uganda for onward travel. We can arrange extensions in either country.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do gorilla trekking in both Uganda and Rwanda?
Uganda and Rwanda offer completely different gorilla trekking experiences. Uganda's Bwindi is dense, ancient equatorial forest — gorilla encounters feel wilder and more dramatic. Rwanda's Volcanoes NP has larger families, more open terrain, and the emotional weight of Dian Fossey's legacy. Doing both gives you a complete understanding of mountain gorilla conservation and incomparably rich wildlife memories.
Is the Rwanda permit ($1,500) included?
Yes — both the Uganda gorilla permit ($800) and the Rwanda gorilla permit ($1,500) are included in the G-09 package price. The total permit value is $2,300 per person — both covered.
Do I need visas for both countries?
Uganda charges $50 for a tourist eVisa (apply at evisa.go.ug). Rwanda offers a $50 tourist visa on arrival or eVisa (apply at irembo.gov.rw). East Africa Tourist Visa ($100) covers Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya and is excellent value for this cross-border trip. Your Roam Beyond guide will brief you fully on border crossing procedure — it's smooth and well-organised.
"Gorilla trekking permits are strictly limited — only 8 visitors per gorilla family per day. Peak season (June–September) sells out months in advance. Start your Roam Beyond payment plan now to secure your date."
